Huynh Phong (b. 1959) escaped Vietnam on 29 October 1983.  His boat lost direction and drifted many days in the South China Sea.  The majority of the passengers, including Huynh's wife and children, did not survive due to starvation, dehydration and disease.  He and a few others survived by means of cannibalism before being rescued.  Haunted by his loss and by the memory of the journey, and longing for resettlement in a third country, Huynh fell into severe depression, and he has been locked in a mental cell in Palawan ever since.
